When and Why Do You Need a Shamanic Healing Session?

How do you know when you should seek out a shamanic energy healing session? This is the million dollar question!

Here is my answer:

When you are walking around feeling like you are carrying a boulder on your shoulders or you are walking around in a fog or you just feel chronically blah.

When you are caught in what seems to be unassailable chronic anxiety and fear, depression and grief.

When there is a lot of conflict or chaos in your life which never seems to shift, no matter what you do.

When you have a sense that there may be other lifetimes impacting your present life.

When everything else you’ve done haven’t quite gotten to the heart of the matter.

When you get to a point that you are ready to dramatically shift a heavy pattern, break through a stubborn block and catalyze a new trajectory for your life.

I came to that point in my life some 30 years ago.  I discovered energy healing modalities in the early 90s.  It was a truly a revelation and changed my life.  I had worked with a few talk therapists since my early 20s, one of them a Jungian psychoanalyst.  There is no doubt that talk therapy was tremendously helpful.  I had a lot to unpack: my relationship with my complicated, abusive and controlling mother had created a lot of distortions in my thinking, a tendency towards depression and anxiety, and a pattern of conflict in relationships.  I needed help with learning how to set boundaries, to find out who I truly was underneath the persona I had created to survive as my mother’s daughter, and to navigate my interactions with her as she slowly devolved into greater and greater levels of meanness, chaos and paranoia.

Insight into our past, patterns and family history is key to personal and spiritual growth. Unpacking and repacking these stories are a first step towards unwinding our conditioning, for better or worse, by our family and society.   If we have experienced any kind of trauma–from verbal, emotional, physical or spiritual abuse by parents, caregivers, siblings, teachers and others, or sexual assault or any other form outright physical violence of any kind–sitting with a caring and responsive therapist is extremely important and helpful.  So can the use of pharmaceuticals to address depression, anxiety and other imbalances.

I always say that Creator/Spirit has provided us with many medicines to address our ills in this stressful world we live in!

But perhaps you have come to a point when you realize you want to go further and deeper.

I myself stumbled on energy medicine really quite by accident. One day in 1992, I was shopping at the local whole foods grocery.  I stopped on the way out to read the flyers on their community bulletin board. I saw one that said, “somato-emotional release and past life regression.” Without any further thought, I tore off a little tab with the woman’s phone number.

At the time, I was grappling with the recent onset of chronic pain in the soft tissue of my neck and shoulders. The doctors didn’t know what to do.  In my professional life, I was deeply unhappy and dealing with a verbally abusive boss and in my personal life, my mother had come to Charlottesville to live and was creating havoc.  By then, I had been in talk therapy for 10 years. While I had gained a tremendous amount of insight and was slowly building in self-understanding and self-esteem, I was still dealing with a lot of anxiety and depression.  I also recognized that I had a pattern of conflict with friends and boyfriends.  And I had a hunch that some of the challenges on my plate had links to other lifetimes.

I called and booked an appointment.  That session was to radically change the course of my life.

Janet, the healer, put her hands lightly on my body. As I went into a light trance, I began to experience the death of a holy warrior in the Middle Ages on a field of battle somewhere in the Middle East.  I share that story in another blog.  What was remarkable about the experience was how this man’s life and death intersected with mine to create a powerful transformation for both of us.

As I connected with him through my inner seeing, feeling and sensing through the reach of time in making peace with his violent life and dying with hope for his forgiveness at the feet of His Lord Christ (as he referred to him), his realization as he died that Jesus did not mean him to kill, but to love, then healed me.  He was a perpetrator waging war against innocent men, women and children; I was caught in a war zone where others were victimizing me.  We had medicine to offer one another.  He was my shadow and I was his.  Healer-warrior were in a sacred dance of truth and reconciliation to release us both from the victim-perpetrator cycle into a new freedom.  After an hour on the table, I stood up pain-free, light and bright in my mind.

This was the beginning of what became a long engagement with energy healing–which eventually led me to the particular work of shamanic energy medicine.

I learned a lot from this session: How the psyche speaks in metaphor and symbol, feeling and sensing. How issues and events in our present life can intersection with other lifetimes in dramatic ways–both for the better and the worse.  How current challenges and traumas create a heavy, sticky energy in the Light Body which then leads to their perpetuation in our outer life.  How energy medicine can powerfully transform current suffering.

I then continued to use energy medicine for many years to heal my trauma so I could harness the life I wanted to live.  I still go for tune-ups when I find myself coming up against a huge block.

So how does it work?  If you came to me for an energy healing session, what happens? Who are the powerful beings who assist me–and you?

Energy healing modalities all have core similarities. They all work on clearing and cleaning the Light Body and, in so doing, open up and cleanse the chakras (however, some do not speak explicitly about or refer to these elements as the “Light Body” or chakras).  They operate on the assumption that everything at its essence is energy–light–and that everything originates as energy.  So it is that any appearance of imbalance in the mind, body and emotions originates in the energy field. Many call upon assistance from Creator/Spirit/God, Angels, Archangels, spirits, ancestors and/or those whom I refer to as Great Beings of Light such as Jesus, Buddha, White Buffalo Calf Woman, Kwan Yin, etc. Who and what they call upon are relevant to their beliefs and wisdom lineages.  They seek to bring the body-mind-emotions into balance.

Shamanic energy medicine does all this.  In my practice, I also call upon the Great Beings of Light, Angels and Archangels of the Highest Order and Creator-Spirit. In addition, I directly invoke Mother Earth and All our Relations (2- and 4-footed, creepy crawlies, winged, feathered, furred and shelled). Further, I pray to the Adawees–or Great Beings of Light from the Pleiades who keep the gates of the 4 Lodges (directions of the Medicine Wheel) from the spiritual lineage of Venerable Dhyani Ywahoo, as well as the animal allies whose job is to be a bridge to the particular vibrational frequencies or medicines of each Lodge: Serpent, Jaguar, Hummingbird and Eagle.

The animals help me see more deeply into the root of the problem and to lead me where I need to go to shift it.  The Great Beings of Light bring their own particular medicine and work in conjunction with me. Your Guides and Guardians and Higher Self also come into the room.

In my healing sessions, the room is power-packed!

Here is an overview of what happens in a session:

Setting Clear Intention

First, we will talk about the challenges, patterns and issues showing up most strongly in your life. What is troubling you? What is holding you back? From the past or in the present? What would you like to do differently? What would you like to change?

This part of the session feels a bit like talk therapy. Yet the goal is a bit different: you are not seeking to remember, analyze and understand your past experiences or even present conditions, but to connect into their energy, sensations in the body and related emotions.  In this way, I can capture the very tip of the thread–that cord of light which links present experience into the past or the future–and pull it through the eye of the needle. Once this is done, then a clear intention for the work can be set and followed. Our shared intention then links into the trapped or hidden energies in the body, mind, emotions, and Deep Self, but also into the soul gifts and parts which are waiting to return into conscious awareness and manifestation.

Selecting a Helping Stone

I then hand you a stone from my mesa, or medicine bundle which will be your healing ally. This stone can draw heavy energies out of your field or transfer light energies into it. I then have you hold the stone close to your mouth and blow 3 times into it to imprint it with the emotions, physical sensations, and intention. You then lie on the massage table, fully clothed.  There, for the duration of the energy healing component of the session, you relax and breathe in through the nose and out through the  mouth while imagining that you are inhaling the light and healing energies available in the room and exhaling the heavy energies in yourself.

Testing Your Light Body

I take the healing ally stone, now infused with your energy and intention, to test which energy centers or chakras are most affected by the issue. When you are stressed or out of balance one or all of the chakras will often be clogged, torn, spinning improperly, or otherwise unhealthy.  I place the stone on lowest of the affected chakras.

Clearing the Light Body and Installing New Imprints

I use a variety of tools and methods to move and remove heavy energy:  my hands, feather fans, the natural movement of sound (rattling, drumming, singing, whistling), the sweet smoke of sage and Palo Santo, and visualization.  I then travels to the Deep Self, often called in western shamanism the “Lower World”–the subconscious–to extract the experiences, oaths, curses, vows, and soul contracts which have been binding your energy and creating unhappiness in your life.  I cut the energy cords which connect you to past experiences, people and places which no longer serve you.  I then travel again to retrieve lost soul parts and rewrite old soul contracts.  Once I have these, I blow them into selected chakras so they will integrate into your Light Body and thus begin to catalyze new experiences and greater happiness in your life.

Debriefing and Meaning

Once the energy medicine portion of the session is complete, You and I review what we both saw, felt, sense, and heard, what was cleared out, and the soul gifts, soul parts, new soul contracts, and higher destinies brought back and seeded into your Light Body.  In this way, you leave not only with a clear and clean Light Body, but you have a renewed sense of purpose and intention for your life ahead.

The next question that comes up is how long does it take to heal?

Will one session be enough to radically change your life? Or more? The answer varies from person to person: one person may come and experience a profound and immediate transformation. Sometimes, I may suggest at the end of a single session that you come for one, two or more sessions. Occasionally, if the imprint of trauma is especially deep, I may advise that it is unknown how many sessions may be needed. There are many reasons for using shamanic energy medicine.

The trauma in my life was so deeply impactful that it took many years of work to heal. I was determined and diligent. I tracked every imbalance to its roots and worked with some wonderful, loving and powerful energy healers over the years.

I still consider energy healing to be an important part of my self-care toolkit when I hit a particularly stubborn roadblock.

When you meet with me, we will do the work and then figure out what intention will best serve you.  And as we start, beloved jaguar, humminbird and condor will come in to help.  You will be in good hands!   You are loved!
